Khrushev in-between series

Khrushchev-era buildings in a transition period emerged in the mid-1950s. You can find them in Holosiivskyi district and Vidradnyi Avenue in Kyiv.

These are 5-storey houses with 3 – 5 front access doors (entrance halls) with 4 apartments per storey.

Walls are made of red brick. Houses have armoured concrete floors.

Buildings have a very sophisticated look — façade decoration was discarded because the construction was restricted in time.

Ceilings are relatively high — from 2.7 to 2.75 m.

Almost all apartments (95%) have communicating rooms and restrooms combined with bathrooms. Area of apartments is rather small.

Kitchens are equipped with gas cookers and sometimes with gas boilers.

Houses are not equipped with elevators and rubbish chutes.

Additional data: Construction of Khrushchev-era apartments in the transition period was characterized by focusing rather on speed and number of houses than on their quality. At that time, many people were in need of housing, so real estate developers tried to meet the demand as soon as possible. Unfortunately, this resulted in poor quality of buildings that were something in between common Khrushchev- and Stalin-era buildings.
